Characters for Charitable Causes Thesis Study

Has your nonprofit or association ever created a fictional character, avatar, or persona to serve as a spokesperson for your organization’s communications campaigns?  If so, your participation is needed!

For my master’s thesis, entitled “Characters for Charitable Causes,” I’m seeking to explore how nonprofit organizations have utilized characters (as opposed to celebrity spokespeople and testimonials) to communicate with their publics. Examples of this concept include Smokey the Bear (utilized by three nonprofit organizations: the United States Forest Service, the National Association of State Foresters, and the Ad Council), as well as Rosie the Riveter.

Organizations who have utilized this concept are encouraged to participate in an interview on your character’s development process.  If possible, I’d also like to be able to distribute surveys or compile data which measures the success of the organization’s character. If preferred, your organization’s identity in the study can remain confidential.
